    Hi nursemolly,

There's a fairly recent thread on things we remember that makes for interesting reading so I've added your thread to it to keep all the memories together. :)

  • There is most definately such a thing as growing pains.
My daughter gets them regularly.Thinking she was 'attention seeking' I asked the doctor and was told yes

My daughter used to get them too and I took her to the docs cos I thought she was having me on - he confirmed that was what they were
  • Does anyone remember 'sweet tobacco' it was stringy and coconut flavour:confused:

you can still get it, ive seen it on the old fashioned sweet shops sites. My favorite were toffee pillows but nobody apart from my mum can remember them and they arent on the net anywhere.

    Oh ..............memories........................

loo roll (before it became soft and called toilet tissue) .........like greaseproof paper with Medicated with Izal Germicide stamped across every sheet........
Fresh bread delivered every day ...........I used to nick the crust of the corner...........always denied it to Mum
Ice on the inside of the windows ..........roaring great fire to give the front of my legs a strange red blotchy pattern while my back froze
Hot water bottles...............lovely at night...........not so in the morning when they'd gone cold
Snow that was 'proper' snow...........we built an igloo one winter
Staying at Grans in the country with a chamber pot under the bed and a 'bucket' loo down the cobbled yard, water from the well...........no hot water in the house so kettle permanently on..............coffee made with 'condensed' milk, grans homemade cakes, fresh fruit and veg (we always nicked the peas)
Christmas at my other Grandads...........lot more to eat and loads of games to play
August holidays in Cliftonville, same boarding house year after year and the sun always shone
Outings to the seaside with the Working Mens Club
Mum getting drunk the night before Coronation and too ill to watch it on Grandads tele
Searching out house for the tele when I saw the t.v.ariel on the roof
Passing the 11 plus (how ????) and going to grammar school, expensive uniform Mum couldn't afford so she made mine.
Hair put in rags at night so it curled in the morning..........horrendous hairstyle............lol

Oh I could go on and on but suddenly I feel just that little bit old..........................lol

nagging my mum to buy me leg warmers but she thought they were riduculous
Ditto the above with a rara skirt
    LP records
    Austin maxi cars
Going out to play in the fields and over the woods in the summer summer early in the morning and not returning till late at night (except when hungry!) because you could then
    Rubiks cube

I was a kid in the late 70's early 80's and it was a great time to be a kid

My dad didn't polish our shoes - WE had to polish them, he inspected them to make sure they were done properly!

Baggy navy blue knickers with pocket for hanky - you mean they don't wear them any more?

School uniform bought when you were 11 (grammar school, expensive uniform), bought to "last", therefore WAY too big - blazer practically down to your knees, and sleeves much too long, gymslip flapping about and down to mid-calf or lower. "Skirt" shorts for PE/games which were baggy and came below the knees.
Chaps look away now. Those STs that hung on little hooks on a sanitary belt  ! When we were 14/15 me and my big sister asked mum if we could use those tampax things that she used:j . The girls at school were adamant that using them meant I was no longer a virgin:rotfl: . Sorry, chaps, too much information here.

We STILL play Newmarket for pennies when we get together at Christmas - new pennies now of course.

I used to get paid my pocket money for polishing everyones shoes.

    God! those awful ST belts!!:o

I don't remeber anything that fitted when it was bought new; I would always have to grow into it!!!!!!
  • Does anyone remember Zambuck - the green linament for cuts and grazes. Or getting your skint knees wiped with iodine  OUCH. My mum was brill at making tablets, fudges, shortbread - all the sweet things. My Auntie Jean used to make jams - Rhubarb, Damson. Never see Damsons anymore. First tasted crystallised ginger with my Auntie Jean - she put it in the Rhubarb Jam. Oh, and how about Clootie dumpling with really thick leatherly skin - honest, I was told put cold tea in the Clootie dumpling mix to get a thick skin. I remember butter being sold in pats from Ray Hanlons shop, on the Main Street, Baillieston. And jubilees - cola flavoured from the same shop. Worst memories - potted haugh (spelling?)   Oh yeuch, what about tongue on a sandwich. Won't mention tripe.

Grew up on Stovies, mince and tatties, soups, and of course bread with everything. I remember when Vesta curries first appeared - how very exotic:D Didn't really drink fizzy drinks when younger.

Did anyone howk tatties straight out of the garden?
