I remember the cadburys five centre chocolate bar too! I cant think of the name but there was one which was layers of milk and (I think) plain chocolate, called five boys or something, maybe confusing it with five centres, but this was just chocolate layers and def had a boy on the cover!????? Remember Cadburys 1d and 2d choccie bars, those little ones, used ot suck it like a lolly to make it last longer!!?
Edited to say - I just googled fove boys, and one site says its the same as five centres, but the one Im thinking of didnt have the different centres, just a choc bar
There were Fry's chocolate creme bars (still around today I think) and then there were Fry's Medley bars (with each section a different flavour - coffee, strawberry, plain fondant, orange, lemon) - I think it's the Medley that you're thinking of.
There were Milk Tray Selection bars with the equivalent of around 8 chocolates all joined together with chocolate. They also did a Bournville Selection bar - which was my real favourite. Plain chocolate always seemed so much 'grown-up' than milk chocolate!
Have to say that I also remember a very small thin bar of chocolate for a halfpenny by Cadbury's. They did 1d, 2d and 3d ones as well. 6d's were considered a bit greedy (but ok for 2 kids to divide) and 1/- was for family sharing!
When you mention the chocolate with different layers, are you sure you aren't thinking of a Terry's bar that was milk, plain, milk AND ALSO plain, milk, plain. They were delicious and you could, if you were careful, separate the different layers with your teeth!0 -
Olliebeak, thank you, that was driving me crazy!! It was definitely the Fry's medley bar I was remembering! They didn't do that in the machine!!
DH has just said didn't Five boys layered chocolate bar ( yes definitely 5 boys not Terry's) become *superfine* barYou never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -

. And the little notes I would take to the "ladies shop" the lady would read the note then pop off for a minute and come back with a package tied with brown paper and string . And I would take the package home for mum wondering what was inside!!
(Dr whites)!!!
totally a tog!:D0 -
I can remember getting some ST's in 1964 called 'Nikini' which consisted of 'supposedly leak-proof panties' with press-stud fasteners inside that were used to keep the pad (with two little holes to take the press-studs) in place - no belts and no loops). They worked fine as long as you weren't too active!
Only problem was the actual pads were nearly twice the price of good old Dr.Whites.0 -
Eeeeehh, just spent a grand half hour catching up on this thread - haven't read it for about 10 days!
Can I add another two pennorth?
Saturdays, my big bro' would take me out of Mum and Dad's hair for most of the day. Swimming in the morning, lunch at the swimming pool cafe consisting of a cup of oxo and hot water, with a cream cracker balanced on top of the cup. If you left it there too long it went soggy and horrible from the steam! Strange thing was, you just HAD to dip the cracker in the oxo though, so that it went soggy anyway!
After the baths, a quick look around Middleton market.....there was a man there who I think must have lost his legs in the war, poor soul. He didn't have a wheel chair, he used to sit on a little wooden board on wheels and get himself around that way....he sold shoe laces and used to have all the different kinds spread out over his "stumps" - used to hold some sort of awful fascination for me and I'm afraid I probably used to stand staring at him for ages!
Then off to the "flicks" for the Saturday afternoon matinee......lots of awful cowboy serialisations, oh and I vaguely remember a series of films called "The Thief of Baghdad", I think ...ring any bells with anyone? Oh, and "Flash Gordon" - used to scare the living daylights out of me
Then home for the evening to a game of cards or monopoly around the kitchen table with Mum and Dad.
Oooooh, talking of the kitchen, what about getting dressed in front of the open oven door on a freezing morning......?
Oh and Cadbury's "flat twenties" - blimey, they were a special treat! Or what about Neopolitans? I think they still make those...same sort of thing as the flat twenties but different flavours.
Raspberry ruffles? Mum's favourite sweets. We used to club together the remains of our pocket money to buy her some for her birthday present! I'm sure I've seen a raspberry ruffle chocolate bar recently somewhere, but not the individual sweets - do they still make them?
Pineapple chunks! (Hard sweeties covered in sugar that lasted for hours if you could resist the temptation to "crunch" them).......cor I could go on for ever!
I SO love this thread.......thanks!0 -
middleton market! i never went there, but i was as a child constantly dragged around oldham flea market and bury market (every other stall sold black pudding!) don't suppose you ever ate black peas did you Bobbykins? i've just ordered some in time for bonfire night! ooooh delicious northern delicacy:Dtotally a tog!:D0

Bobbykins I think Woolies sometimes have raspberry ruffles and a stall in my local market sold them too so worth looking around. I'm sure I've seen Pineapple chunks in woolies picknmix? They used to do pear drops too yum......
I used to love those old fashioned spangles, but didnt like the normal fruity ones.
We used to play cards too and do jigsaws and if any visitors happened to drop in they used to join in. My kids and I still have regular card sessions, my dgd (8yo) is a real card shark! we still play rummy, newmarket and poker!!... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Is that what you call Carlin peas positivelymummy? I worked with a yorkshireman who raved about them, he said they were a favourite 'bar snack' in his local too... don't throw the string away. You always need string!
