Uniform allowance - volunteers???

I saw that those that wear uniform can claim tax relief. However, I volunteer for St John Ambulance and our uniform is quite extensive as we have special trousers, shirts, fleeces etc. Can volunteers claim? The form didn't include volunteers but then it didn't exactly exclude us.

The laundry allowance for uniforms is a deduction against the tax paid by the employee.

As you do not receive any pay as a volunteer there is no tax deducted for any allowance to be set off against.

True, but volunteers may be paying tax against income from another source. Are you sure laundry allowance cannot be claimed? I have a personal interest here so would appreciate a link. Thanks B

Ok thanks. Thought I'd find out. To be fair we are asked to claim any expenses, but I don't know anyone who would claim for their washing!! It's just not possible anyway as detergents, electric, water bills etc are not singled out separately for washing the actual uniform.
