Applied back for the last 4 years but only got £45 cheque. Thought it should be more?

Assuming basic rate taxpayer.
£60 allowance x 20% tax = £12
For 4 years that should have been £48 so yea £3 short.0 -
Perhaps there was one of the years where you paid less than £12 tax? You only get back what you paid, HMRC don't give you money, they only give you what you overpaid.Anything I post on here is my own personal opinion, and quite likely not the view of my employer. My knowledge may not be up-to -the minute current, but I'll give you the best I can.0

You don‘t get back the value of the expense, you get back the tax relief, i.e. the tax paid on the money used to pay for the expense.
So for a 20% taxpayer you get back 20% of the value of the expense, which for a £60 expense is £12.
The reason why you didn‘t get the full £48 will be down to tax table discrepancies. Everyone who is paid via paye ends the year slightly underpaid because of the way that tax is calculated under PAYE. This amount is generally written off at the end of the tax year, but is taken into account when any refunds are calculated.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.
