Tax relief, what can I claim?

Hey guys! Few questions on tax relief.

From what I read I can only claim the tax back (rather than the total amount) on my professional subscriptions, is that correct? The professional registration is only for my work, and not used outside of that.

Also, if I only worked in a role for 6 months of the tax year, should I only claim half of the flat rate allowance?

I changed employer about 10 months through a tax year, doing the same job. Should I claim using my old employers details or my new? It says to claim for each employment however that would mean that I would claim twice for the same thing?

Finally, should I submit a preliminary tax relief form for this tax year now, so that my tax code will be correct for the next tax year?

Cheers! :-)

you claim the cost of allowable expenses
the effect on your tax depends upon your tax rate

so if your expenses were £100 per annum then you would see a reduction in tax of 100 X 20% or 100 x 40% depending upon your tax rate

tax is an annual tax even though you pay it monthly : so you make one claim to HMRC (and NOT your employer).
HMRC may or may not adjust your code for next tax year.
  • Flat rate allowance and relief for professional subscriptions are different things..

You can only claim tax relief if your professional body appears on "HMRC List 3". Google it as i cant post links.

If it does, fill in a P87 form for the job you want to claim against. You claim the actual cost and only once (as you only paid it once). You will receive tax relief on the expense rather than the actual amount back as explained above
