Halifax MPPI

Hello All,

I took my mortgage out in Nov 1995 with the Halifax. My last payment was in Oct 2015.

Whilst going through some old statements I have noticed that there has been an 'Insurance Premium' of £18.18 included in with my mortgage payments each month.

Is this what is called MPPI? and if so can I claim it back? (I was not aware of it being included, or if I was given an option to go elsewhere for it.)

Thank you for your time.

Colin.

Halifax used to collect either MPPI, life assurance (or other types) or home insurance via the mortgage. So, it could be any of those.
and if so can I claim it back? (I was not aware of it being included, or if I was given an option to go elsewhere for it.)

Most MPPi complaints fail (unlike loan and credit card). You dont appear to have decent complaint reasons
1 - not aware of having it is one of the weakest complaints going. You cant prove it and they will have evidence showing you agreed it
2 - Halifax did allow you to buy it elsewhere. So, that will fail as its an incorrect allegation
3 - You have contradicted yourself as you said you were not aware you had it. So, how can you accuse them of not giving you the choice to buy elsewhere
4 - There was and still isnt a requirement to tell you that you can buy your insurances elsewhere. They just cant tell you that you can only use them.

All that said, Halifax do tend to rollover easily on PPI complaints. So, if that is an MPPI policy then they may refund where others would not. However, if its a multi-segment policy (such as their TMPP) they will only refund the MPPI segment and not the Life assurance, critical illness or income protection segments as they are not PPI.

It may be an idea to find out what the insurance is before making a complaint. You may also want to tighten your complaint reasons as well as they are easily rejected as it stands. You would be reliant on another failure being identified or getting lucky with auto payout.

  • Thank you for the advice dunstonh. I will contact the Halifax and find out what the insurance covered.
