Does anyone else have angina?

I'm 49 and it came on over the Christmas period.

I had been very depressed with agitation, and my G.P. thinks this may have triggered it. She prescribed Amlodipine plus the GTN spray to use when I feel discomfort. I'm not so depressed now, just a bit worried in general.

I eat healthily, am a normal weight, but have reduced the amount of exercise I do through fear of having other attacks, although my doctor says it's safe to continue exercise after using the spray.

Luckily, it's the stable type of angina I have; it could be a lot worse.
I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

  • Did he do an ECG or try a 24 hr heart monitor ? I m surprised that that was nt the first check he called on for something like angina. I visited my doctor last month with something possibly heart related and he soon got one organised, followed by a 24 hr monitor when that revealed nothing untoward.

No, she is referring me to a cardiologist but is convinced that it is angina since the pain is only after exertion and the spray works.

Until you've seen a cardiologist and had the necessary tests, it's hard to know what the cause is.

A couple of years ago (at 32) I had shooting pains down my left arm, tight chest, it was really scary. Rang the doctor and they wouldn't see me, insisted I went to A and E. I was really worried as my mum had her first heart attack at 32.

Following various cardiologist tests including 24 hour ambulatory monitoring, ECG and a myocardial perfusion test, I was thankfully given the all clear for heart problems.

It turned out the symptoms I had were brought on by stress and were more a 'warning', and not a heart problem. I was told this was called 'Syndrome X', where it mimics angina symptoms but actually isn't.

I only mention this because in your situation you mention you'd been agitated. You really need to get the proper tests done before worrying yourself further and thinking the worst.

Hope you get good news and are healthy and stress free soon.
  • My partner's mother, an active woman, had angina about 10 years ago. Started off affecting her tennis playing then could be a problem even drying herself after a shower. She got diagnosed, had tablets for a while and as far as I know it's now better. She still plays tennis now at age 86, so I'd say there is certainly hope for you.
