I don't have any knowledge of satellite broadband but have you considered a 4G wifi router connecting to a 4G signal from a mobile operator (if there are any mobile operators offering this in your area). This would probably give faster connection speeds than satellite. I am assuming you can't get a good speed through a normal phone line connection

Looking at satellite BB suggests rural setting. Unlikely to have access to 4G coverage. If you do OP, 4G is a better option.

latency on satellite would do my head in.

Had a really bad experience with satellite broadband many years ago (star speeder?) Wasted about £250 on equipment and installation and the service was awful and company went bust after 3 months, sigh.

It's the contention ratio that gets me. EVERY USER is sharing the same pipe. How much bandwidth they have is divided up between everyone! That's why they restrict your downloads so much.

Oh and it takes ~400ms for the signal to travel to the satellite and back (even at the speed of light).

If you want faster internet, move house.
  • How rural is "rural"? Surely most places have broadband coverage by now?
  • I live too rurally to get decent broadband speeds but 4G coverage is excellent from both Vodafone and EE. We use a MiFi device from EE and get great download speeds.

I can bring you somewhere that is 4 miles from the centre of Newry, and the best speed I have seen down their line is 500K, that's 1/2 a meg. The average speed is around 50K.

On a 4g dongle the speeds were around 2 meg, but still spotty.

Rural is not quite as remote as you might think!!
  • I am about 3 miles from Newtownards and 1Mb download speed is typical. It may make it to the heady heights of 3Mb on a good day.

With our EE 4G Mifi thingy, we easily get 30Mb+

You'll not get uncapped. For £20 you'll probably stretch to 4gb allowance. Look at Astra, if you have sky you can share the same dish.
