UPDATE : THANKS EVERYONE, GOT A £1.99 HDMI- NOW WORKING PERFECTLY- CHEERS!
hi, have bought 2nd hand slim xbox 360foe DS.
I'm NOT a techie at all-be warned)
the cables are different to the cables of his fat xbox.
I seem to have set it up, but it's only black and white?
there is the cable with the red, yellow and white ends, but none of the green, blue and red ones like the old set.
any help appreciated, wanted this to be a good surprise!
thanks

The cable with the red, yellow and white ends that you now have is a composite cable. The 'old' cable that you had with the green, blue and red ends was a component cable. Are you trying to plug the composite cable into the same place that you plugged the component cable in to? Because there will be a separate input for just a composite cable, and you will need to have the television on a different channel than for the component cable. Look for another set of red, white and yellow plugs that says "AV In' or similar. Plug them into there, and then turn your tv to one of the AV channels (there may be more than one). That should give you a full picture.
However, you should be aware that the previous cable gives a noticeably better picture than the cable that you have now. If it's for a surprise, the person you're buying it for will certainly notice that the picture doesn't look as good as it did! Personally I would either go and buy another component cable (unless you've kept the old one, in which case use that), or alternatively if your tv has an HDMI slot (which it probably should), go and buy an HDMI cable (buy a cheap one; there is no difference in quality between cheap and expensive HDMI cables). The HDMI cable is literally one thing to plug in at each end, and so is (in theory at least) very easy to set up.
HDMI cables look like this."MIND IF I USE YOUR PHONE? IF WORD GETS OUT THATI'M MISSING FIVE HUNDRED GIRLS WILL KILL THEMSELVES."0 -

So , you can't plug in the components and the HDMI at the same time-is that right? I will only use a HDMI cable?
