Hmmm - but where is their loss? They've already paid ... whether I bin the envelope or repurpose it. If I'd deliberately requested their direct mailing in order to obtain the envelopes then I could see their loss / being defrauded. Otherwise, no.

I do love a pointless hypothetical debate :O)

No they havent. The have a postage paid account.
This is billed per item for delivery to the envelopes/account address.
You are simply sending an item with no postage paid.

I think morally it would be wrong and probably legally as well, but then I am probably a bit on the old fashioned side of morality at my age :):):)

  • Hi,

    why not try it out.

Stick a tenner in envelope and post it to yourself.
  • Hm, when I think of the amount of junk mail I get - not to mention cold calls - I'm not sure if my moral would be strong enough to not give it a try :-)

The first thing that came to my mind from the legal side of the whole business are unsolicited goods... So when a company sends you a book and it isn't a mistake that it was sent to you, you can keep it and won't have to pay and you're allowed to read it... So when the envelope is sent to you - which I suppose wasn't a mistake - it is therefore yours and you would not have to pay and should be allowed to use the envelope with the postage just as you are allowed to read the book from the example.

There'd be nothing to stop you using the envelope, but if you are not returning it to the person who has bought the pre paid licence, you'd need to put the correct postage stamps on it. Otherwise, as I said, the recipient would pay the postage and the additional £1 fee.

I've not actually tried it myself*, but s there anything legally wrong with sticking a label over the original return address and using them for your own postal purposes? Not too interested in the moral aspect (after all, wasting the money of a company that junk mail advertises is a public service), just the legal.

There was a thread quite a long time ago about this, and the answer then was 'yes, it's illegal'.

*When I used to get quite a few of them, though, I used to take great delight in taking the advertising bumph from one company and stuffing it into the envelope of the other then posting them off ...

That's not illegal as it's being sent to the person who paid for it.

Except it is RM you are costing,or the recipient if they are charged.
The licence holder wont/cant be charged.
Once again( as you seem to not be grasping it) there is no postage on the envelope.
