Who informs the bank etc

Just a quick question - who informs my banks and credit card companies? Do I have to or the OR? I've been bankrupt two weeks and none of my creditors know and are starting to ring for their money. The only ones that were told by the OR was the two basic accounts I wanted to keep.

Thanks

    The OR will eventually.

For credit cards/loans etc, it can wait until the report to creditors which is 8 weeks (ish).

So if you want to take matters into your own hands, then do.

For creditors being a pain, there is: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=63168413&postcount=1

If you get any creditors being a pain etc, then pass the letters to the OR and/or use that letter to tell them to bog off yourself. OR may contact them if you say you are being bothered, but again can be slow.

One important thing NOT to ignore is if a creditor starts court proceedings. Temptation there is to tell the OR and let them deal with it, but just don't. Tell the OR, yes, but always send back court papers with the defence that the creditor no longer has an remedy for the debt as it is covered by the BR order.

  • Hi Fraggle,

I have been bankrupt 3 weeks today and have not heard anything at all from the OR's office but my creditors have been contacting me for outstanding payments, so last week I just called them and gave them my Bankruptcy Order number and they said they would pass it on to the insolvency team and put a note on the system to stop chasing me and I have not heard anything since.
  • Thanks for the info all - my appreciated!

LOL - Experience has got being a bit more adversarial with creditors off the bat. May not always be needed. :o

    It's quite amazing really.

Before and during the early stages of going BR, everyone fears the OR and believes they hold Demi-God status.

But after a few weeks, you realise the truth - they are just overworked, bored Civil Servants who would rather be working in the Customs drugs investigation unit.

And, rather than panicking because you haven't received any correspondence from them for a couple of months, you just adopt a "whatever" attitude and count the days down until you are released.

All in all, going BR is in fact a huge anti-climax and not half as scandalous as you initially think it will be :)
  • Yes I'm finding that. I think for the average Joe with no assets etc bankruptcy really doesn't mean much day to day - not like the old days when debts meant prison !!!
