Travelling during notice

I've been given 9 weeks notice at work and there are currently six of us clearing the warehouse because the company is closing the depot, we should be finished by the end of next week. There are rumours going around that they want us to go to the new depot in Sandy Bedfordshire once we are done, we all live in Dartford Kent and are currently picked up by mini bus and taken to Aylesford. what I would like to know is can they insist it is a reasonable request (make us) to travel all those extra miles to Bedfordshire?

  • Are they offering you new positions in depot at Sandy, or is this just for your period of the notice ??

    Depends.

If they pay you for time travelled beyond the norm then yes.

Or if your contract states that work is nationwide, then also yes

They did offer us jobs at other depots but we turned them down because they were to far.

You need to check for a mobility clause in your contract. Even if it is there then it has to be a reasonable clause or could be found unfair (in a court)

However, like all things (potential disputes) you should find out first exactly what is happening and not listen to rumours. Then you can have a conversation with your employer and come to some agreement (hopefully). Only if things cannot be satisfied the would you have to start worry about 'can they do this'.............

No extra money and contract is not nationwide.

In which case tell your employer you want to be paid for the additional hours, as the contracted location of work has changed.

What if we don't want to travel that far?

Well you can always refuse to work.

But I presume you still want to be paid? In which case are you salaried or p£/hr

It's not a case of refusing to work, it's a case of can they make us travel to the new depot.

    Make you in what way?

1: Force you on at gun point - well presumably if the choice is to get shot or to travel, the solution is fairly obvious

2: Say you must? well sure, but they can say the sky is purple too

3: Can they withhold pay if you refuse? - depends on a number of factors (contract being the main one)
