Hey everyone my names Dan, I'm a regular reader of MSE and thought I'd sign up at last, I have a question.
So my partner went to work today to find out that her place of work has closed down suddenly, they got no notice of this either. The company has not shut down or anything. So I'm just wondering are they able to do this? Sorry if this is a silly post but I lack knowledge in this area.
Any response is greatly appreciated

Any company is perfectly entitled to shut down their business - or an arm of their business. How the affects the staff is another matter. How long had your girlfriend worked for the company and have they moved her to another branch? Has she spoken to head office?0

She had worked there for a couple of years BUT left before returning so I am assuming those couple of years are "void".. So really it's only been a few months so I'm assuming she can't do anything about it? No the whole thing is a bit hush hush and they still don't know anything yet0

Unless the gap was less than a week or they agreed to treat the employment as continuous (which is unlikely) then I'm afraid so.
In which case all she is entitled to is a week's notice (or pay in lieu) plus any accrued holiday.0 -

It could be more if her contract of employment requires a longer notice period - the week's notice is the statutory minimum for her length of employment.0 -
The only way you will find out what is going on is talk to the company.
