How to keep sinusitis at bay esp at work

Options
I have severe sinusitis and decongestants only last about an hour on tops before I feel awful.

At home, I can do things like unlimited drink warm drinks and inhalations. Can't do that at work as work in retail.

I don't want to ring in sick as my employer only allows two periods of sickness in a year, before discipLinary action. on one from tonsillitis in Nov. Want to reserve that for times I could be more ill.

Go to your GP - there are better decongestants available. The over-the-counter ones will only work for a few days then cause a far worse 'rebound' stuffiness if you stop.

I have a mild steroid one, it works. Used just once a day it keeps it at bay. For emergencies there are also floxonase drops, once a day, same ingredient but more hardcore dose and helps cut through existing sinus inflamation.

Also worth a look is Neilmed squirty bottle nasal rinse - little buffered salt sachets you dissolve in warm water and squirt up one nostril to wash out gunk from the other. It's buffered, so doesn't sting at all!
  • I second the nasal wash, I hate doing it but it really helps regular and chronic sinus sufferers especially if you get the headaches to go with it :( you can make your own saline wash too very cheaply and easily, hope you get it sorted, you have my sympathy :)
  • I've had problems with sinusitis all my life. My heart goes out to you fellow sufferer! (and blast your workplace - I never get it - what the hell do they mean 'only two periods of sickness allowed'??!)

I use Sinupret, which is a herbal remedy (haven't seen it in UK but Amazon seems to have it). It takes time to build up in your system, but I found it helpful even when some antibiotics failed. Sometimes I use it along with other meds, i.e. sprays, antibiotics (shudder), etc.

Would a few drops of sinus relief oil (mixed essential oils from peppermint, eucalyptus, etc.) help? It can be inhaled from a tissue without being obvious.

And I've heard that drinking loads of water helps. Whether it does, I don't know, but I tend to do it because it feels good.
