Club files for voluntary bankruptcy

Not totally sure if this is the right place so please move if not.

I paid for £275 worth of 'points' from a golf club before christmas (22nd Dec 2015) with the idea I would use them in the summer. The idea was they were valid for use until Dec 31st 2016. The way the membership worked was you gave a certain number of points based on when your round was. This worked for me as I preferred playing when it wss cheaper anyway and didn't want to be a full member. I renewed these points from the year before (bought more).

I got an email today (17th Jan 2016) stating they were filing for voluntary liquidation. Gates closed, all inquiries to the insolvency firm. I hadn't used any of the points.

I paid for my points via a BACS transfer.

Have I got any chance of getting anything back or is that money now lost?

I don't know the answer to your question but I'd first want to read through the terms and conditions as these will no doubt vary from contract to contract. Then I'd want to hear what the club manager had to say when asking for some form of payment back; the issue that I'd worry about is that in the past when people have bought vouchers to spend in retail stores (and effectively your 'points' sound a bit like vouchers) they become almost null and void as the retailer sorts out who to pay the remaining financial balance to with the larger share-holders being at the top of the list. People who bought one-off vouchers in that sense tend to be at the end of the list.

If this is the case for you; the best you'd have is a chance at a goodwill payment or sort of payment in kind (eg if they're getting rid of old equipment it may be up for grabs) and it may not be so easy to get that given that everything will now have a £ sign attached to it to attempt to pay back any debtors and shareholders first.

But always read your terms and conditions first in case there is any get-out clause for the points you've purchased initially with the club but also with the bank you paid from.
