National Insurance payments

Hi I don't know if anyone can help.
I was self employed but then got a paid job as well (where I earned over the £155 minimum a week).
In terms of national insurance, would I have had to pay my class 2 if I was in a job where I would have presumably been paying class 1 (all my payslips are currently in storage so I cannot check)?
Also I earned very little (under the £5k threshold) through my self employment.
I have now received a letter saying I owe class 2 from the time I started my new job until the end of the tax year.
I'm a bit confused. Obviously I'll pay it if I have to but wondered how it works?
Thanks

Where you still self employed? Or did you stop once you started employment?
What tax year are you referring to?0 -
It was the 14/15 tax year. I started my paid employment in January 2015 and ended my business at the end of March 2015 so there was an over lap.0

Being employed wouldn't stop you being due to pay class 2 NIC as that is purely for self employment.
However if the self employed income was less than £5000, did you apply for a small earnings exception certificate?0 -
Not that I know of, and I'm guessing not now I've got this letter as my accountant has submitted my self assessment for 14/15 so I guess it's based on that.
Thanks for the information.0
