Using my insurance to drive other cars with traders insurance

Hi

I have class 1 business insrance which allows me to drive other insured cars (on personal basis, business use only applies for my own car I think).

My brother recently passed away, and my cousin is going to sell my brothers car through his used car business. He has added the car onto his motor trade insurance so it's all insured.

The car is currently kept on street at the widows place, they've yet to list it online for sale. Kids are sad and get comfort in seeing the car in front of the house, we're not seriously pushing to sell the car as we're busy dealing with other stuff.

I have been asked to move the car every few days so that theives dont see it idle in one spot too long and break in. Trouble is I dont knw where I stand with insurance.

Will my insurance cover me when the cars own insurance is a motor trade policy insurance? Or does the car need to have its own owner driver insurance?

Depends how his trade policy covers it, Only covered whilst the trader or employee drives it?

The wording on your policy regarding DOC's does it have to be insured?

You need to speak to your insurer.

    Who are you insured by?

Does your Certificate state you have driving other cars?

(Business Cover has no effect on whether you have DOC or not)

When I drive other cars am I covered under my policy or the cars policy? I would have thought that I would be covered under my own policy given that my insurer has no business dictating wwhether I can drive another car if they are not insuring me.

Insurer is admiral and the insurance docs are very brief, even the document with small print is short and does not explain it at all.
i will have to give insurance a call tomorrow.

Yes certificate clearly states I can drive other cars as long as the other car is insured and has its own insurance policy. No mention of what type.

What is the exact wording in their policy wording about driving other cars as some Insurers in effect state it needs to hold "It's own insurance policy".

Copy and paste the wording from your policy, it's in the section headed "Liability"

The Policyholder may also drive with the consent of the owner a private
motor car not belonging to him/her and not hired to him/her under a
Hire Purchase Agreement, within our territorial limits, providing there
is a valid insurance policy in force for that car.

In theory that covers it but Admiral are incredibly fussy.

Assuming there's not a wording on the Certificate about the DOC that precludes the other policy being a commercial policy you may be ok.

As the cover requires you to have the owners permission, I would recommend you carry a letter from the executor of the estate giving you permission to drive the vehicle.

Remember it's only third party only cover so there is no cover for damage to the car itself

The owners permission maybe a sticky one, brothers car who passed away?

Maybe issues if its insured under a trade policy though.

  • Wouldn't it be easier for the cousin to move the car? Or even take it to his trade premises?

If it's trade insured, then does it count as a "private motor car"?

I'd either leave it where it is, get the cousin to move it or get it taken to the dealers yard. I doubt thieves will notice it hasn't moved for a few days; a few weeks maybe, but I'd be concerned about things like the battery and tyre flat spots by then.
