Career advice - Lab tech

Hi,
I was hoping someone on these boards would be able to help me with some career advice.
My partner has 8 years experience as a Lab Tech in an opticians, running the lab on his own often and spending the last year as Lab Manager.
He has now left this job, and I just wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions as to what would be an appropriate career move? Despite it being a skilled job, which he is very good at and has worked incredibly hard gaining a lot of experience, it has a real salary cap and there is no real room for progression. I can't find much advice as to how the skills could be transferable and it's looking like he will have to start from minimum wage in any other field.
Any help or advice would be received very gratefully!

What's he been doing since leaving his job?0

He's was working at a bar over Christmas, but he's now finished there and looking elsewhere. He's going to be applying for supermarkets etc, but I would think with 8 years experience in a skilled job + managerial experience he should be able to find something with better prospects/salary than that. But from what I've seen, I can't think of what?0

Sadly not a solid one, I would rather not go into details on the web but there were personal issues and family problems and it led to him leaving immediately rather than waiting to secure the another position first. There was also the hope of taking up a course and retraining however recent events have meant that earning will have to take priority so getting into full time work soon is essential.
I'm really looking to find out if anyone has any suggestions as to what fields it may be worth looking into or even recruitment agencies (if anyone knows of any that serve London) that may be helpful.0
