Second Job Emergency Tax

Options
Hello, I have recently started a second job and am being taxed on it at basic rate. I filled in a new starter form and ticked the box stating this wasn't my main job. In my main job I work 8hrs a week after dropping from full time after maternity leave. My new job is only 7.5hrs a week but with the potential for overtime. I don't have a particularly good idea about my earnings this year due to poor organisation of my payslips and incredibly fluctuating pay due to my mat leave (some months being shorter than others, receiving full time holiday pay adjustments and then dropping down to a short contract) so I'm uncertain I'm armed with enough information to contact HMRC to correct my code - even with overtime I don't earn more than the basic allowance through either of my jobs.

If I leave it, will I get a corrected tax code for both jobs and a tax rebate at the end of the year automatically, or will I need to chase it up now?

TIA

you can make an estimate of how much you will earn in each job and tell HMRC to split your tax code accordingly : even if it isn't right it might be less tax that your are paying now.

You will have the same problem next tax year too and will need to decide how you want your tax code divided between the two jobs.
  • Thank you! Well my earnings in my "main job" are stable so it might be worthwhile splitting my code based on that. I've never had two jobs before so that's useful to know.
  • I used their online calculator for the current year, then informed them I thought my tax was too high using this form, https://online.hmrc.gov.uk/shortforms/form/P2 . I put the result from the calculator and details of my second job in "additional information".

They did the "split" between the 2 jobs themselves, and refunded me through the PAYE system.
