Interview question?

Friend (adult) had an interview recently and was interviewed by two people (neither worked in HR). The friend was asked for her AGE in the interview!
I was surprised when she mentioned this to me, as age had nothing to do with the job.
Can interviewers still ask about age in the interview, even we have Age Discrimination act?
Thanks

They can ask, they cannot use it as part of the decision making process. In reality they may well, they may even do it when they don't ask as they can judge someone on their appearance or dates on their application. The difficulty is proving that they did, as they can easily say another candidate was better qualified/ a better fit etc.0
