Emergency tax

Options
Please move if in the wrong section.

My wife moved to England to live with me in 2014 and started her first job in the UK in September 2015.
She has been paying emergency tax ever since, tax code ot.

Because she isn't really clued up on the English tax system when ever she asks at work they tell her to contact the taxman.
I have looked online and the online forms ask for forms from the previous tax year, obviously we don't have them.

Is there an easy way to claim back the overpaid tax and get a proper tax code? And should her work be doing anything to sort out her tax code, or is that out of their hands now.

Thanks

easiest thing is to pick up the phone and tell HMRC that she has started her first and only job
they will issue a new tax code to her company
try first thing in the morning 8am ish.

it should have been sorted when she joined the company and filled in a starters form : too late now.

And has she done this ?
The employer has no authority to amend her tax code, they have to apply the code that HMRC tells them too (or, when first joining, is on the P45 from a previous job).

I think they're right she needs to contact HMRC - I'm told that first thing in the morning (just before 8am) is usually quickest

*EDIT: Posted simultaneously with CLAPTON - at least we agree :-)

Did she complete a starter checklist when she started the job?
  • I asked her about the starters checklist. She said she gave her nam and address and N I number but doesn't recall what the form was as they filled it in.

Can I phone the HMRC on her behalf, or do they need to speak to her?

They need to speak to her, it's her record.

She at least needs to pass security (she can ask for a translator if required).

If she then wants to pass it over to you then she can.

Ok thanks, she is actually very good in English, it's just the different English accents she finds hard to understand!

Thanks, I have come across that form but can't complete the first page as she doesn't have a PAYE coding notice from HMRC as this is her first job started in September 2015

Then she can either telephone or write - I myself had to query my code, did so in writing so that all relevant facts were set out and had an answer within a month.
