Can I claim Mortgage PPI was Self Employed

Hi, Hoping someone can give me some advice.
When my ex and I got our last mortgage he was self employed, we were told we had to pay mortgage insurance, even though he wouldn't have been able to claim if he couldn't work. (I wasn't working, it was done entirely on his earnings) The mortgage was taken out about 17/18 years ago, and paid off after selling the house about 7/8 years ago.
First, is it even possible to reclaim this kind of insurance, is it a kind of PPI? Or is it too late anyway?
Second, would we have to do it jointly, as the mortgage was in both names? (This shouldn't be a problem)
Third, how do we go about it if we no longer have any of the paperwork (am looking, but not hopeful)
Thanks!

Why wouldnt he be able to claim?
Most MPPI covers the self employed perfectly fine.

MPPI is a type of PPI but suffers fewer issues than loan and credit card PPI. Indeed, whilst most loan/credit card PPI complaints succeed, most MPPI complaints fail. Today, MPPI is one of two types of PPI still retailed.

If you were not working then the MPPi would be covering your ex. So, only he can complain and if the complaint is successful, then only he would get paid the redress.

if you used a mortgage broker/adviser then this is pre-regulation. if it was a bank then its ok.
