Tax rebate travelling abroad

Options
I am leaving the country on 5th April to go travelling abroad for a year, therefore I won't be working at all during the tax year April 2016 - April 2017. At present my official work leaving date is April 8th and because I am on a salary, I will receive pay for April 6th, 7th, 8th even though I am not in the country. If I tried to claim back tax, would it be for the tax year 2015 - 2016? In which case do I need to change my official work leaving date? Any help would be much appreciated as the Givernment guidance is not very clear

The date you earn your wages has no bearing on your tax position all that matters is the date it is paid. So the question is will you receive any wages on or after 6 April 2016. If you will then the tax paid on these wages will fall in the 2016 2017 tax year even if part of the wage is for work you did before 6 April or possibly even accrued holiday pay owing to you.
  • Thank you. Will that make a difference with regards to claiming tax back?

If your total income for the 2016/17 is less than the £11,000 personal allowance then you can claim the tax back.

if you are being paid for 8 days in April, then you need to earn £916 before any tax will be deducted
how much do you expect 8 days to amount to?
