Set Up Direct Debits

I have been reading threads and all I see is comments like "I have set p d/d from my account or I have opened up an account and set up 2 direct debits"

My questions are - How do you set up direct debits yourself? and once you do, how long does it take it kick in,

I need 2 direct debits for 5 days time(my switch date), Horror of horrors have 2 accounts at the same bank, and I gave them the one that doesn't have d/d's on it, so trying to make very quick amends, althought I think I have now set up a d/d for paypal.

Only other solution is to phone them and ask if they can change the switch date to later. Can anyone explain the direct debit system to me step by step? as I have tons of questions.

DDs can be set up in 3-4 working days, but generally can't be pulled for 10 working days.

I suspect because your switch has started you won't be able to stop/change it.

    Who are you switching to?

The DD process involves you asking the DD originator (Paypal, utility provider, charity, savings account provider, etc) to set up a DD on your current account. It's as simple as that.

I just set up a charity one yesterday and it won't be active until the middle of Feb! ( I am of course hoping it will be showing on the account well before that!)

I also set up one from Tesco savings a/c and that too isn't active until next month.

Perhaps it is quicker over the phone?

That's very strange. All mine have appeared within 2-4 days, and I've been able to use them in around 10 days. February is 3 weeks away...15 working days!

Thanks for answering my questions; others have just stated "I Just set up ..." which was one of my questions.

Believe it or not - Clydesdale Bank - and this has had had nothing but problems since I tried to apply BEFORE 30th Nov Last Year.

You state all of yours set up within 3-4 days, can I ask which ones, as I am looking for really quick ones.

And as you know what your talking about, do you know that if by the time my DD hits my account and it has moved to Clydesdale does the DD still count as active?

That was in response to another poster, and was specifically on Tesco savings accounts.

I can't answer that because my DDs have all been in place on day 1 of the 7 day process. However, you're now at day 3? And according to the info on CB's website they ask your old bank for the DD information on days 1-2.

It's not looking good is it?
  • If nothing else they offered me their gold card 0% interest for 27 months. so got that out of them.

My date for switching was 15th January, received letter yesterday saying, switch was under way  and listed at the bottom of the letter was my D/D connected to my switching account.

Much to my surprise - there are 2 :j:j How on earth did that happen, I gave up thinking I was too late to set up another:(.

    Letter tells me switch should be completed by 28th Jan, so with all above info;
Looking Good, don't you think ?? Time will tell, although have to say, possibly the longest switch, ever, taking 2 complete months.
