'relief at source' query!

Options
Any tax experts out there?

I want to know if I filled in my self-assessment tax return properly for the 2014-2015 tax year in relation to a specific question concerning tax relief.

On the form it states 'Payments to registered pension schemes where basic rate tax relief will be claimed by your pension provider (called relief at source). Enter the payments and basic tax rate'.

I put down £2,584 which is the total amount I paid over the tax year - and INCLUDED tax relief and employer contributions - into three WORK-RELATED pension schemes.

A few days after submitting my return I then received a new tax code for 2015-16 of 1318L which replaced 1060L.

I'm wondering whether on the self assessment tax return I shouldn't have put down any amount in response to Question 1 because on the form it states at the top of the relevant page: 'do not include payments you make to your EMPLOYER'S pension scheme which are deducted from your pay before tax or payments made by your employer'.

A look at my wage slip tells me that some payments are deducted before I am paid.

So was my response correct to the tax relief question or not?

My total income for which tax was due for the year 2014-2015 was £38,942 (after personal allowance of £10,000 was taken off).

Because of my response to the tax relief question, my basic rate limit was increased by £2,584 to £34,449 therefore reducing the amount of income charged to higher rates of tax.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

you should not included your employers contribution as you clearly haven't made in from your salary

and you shouldn't include any pension payments that you made before tax

so your entry should have been zero
