Is there anywhere where you can get quick, cheap and simple fixes for torn hems etc. I'm sure it's the sort of thing they would have had on a market stall 20 years ago.

Whereabouts are you? Dry cleaners might have that service assuming there are no folks nearby that do alterations. If there's a craft or haberdashery shop in your town, ask in there?0

A dying trade it seems, Several local markets had stalls that sold material and they also offered repair services, mostly gone now although there maybe 1 or 2 left.
I know one sells material and another sells all the the accesories required, cotton, thread and buttons etc etc.. Im sure ive seen a sign offering services also, maybe the same stall or one opposite.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

We have 2 or 3 in our town , they are brilliant at any repairs and alterations . We found the first one when OH bought a suit and the trousers needed taking up , the shop mentioned they had alterations done by some people with a shop over the road ( there are 2 in same vicinity) . You could try asking a local suit/ dress shop if they use anyone for alterationsVuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0

there is a stall in the Bus station in Glenrothes that does a very good service.0

There are at least three shops in my area that offer this service. One is in the market and the other two are in outlying residential areas (presumably cheaper rent).
Have you googled 'Alterations + name of town where you live'? It's hard to advise when we don't know where in the country you are.0 -
OP, if you ask in your local dry cleaners they'll be able to tell you if they're able to do this; most can and will be able to make minor alterations and repairs. There is a brand of dry cleaners (Johnsons) who also offer repairs and alterations and if you are near a branch. I've not tried them so can't comment on how well they do but I'd imagine if anyone is offering a service like this and have been now for several years they can't be that bad.0

Yes, actually I noticed that yesterday. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place. Thanks everyone.0
