could you not walk to uni or get the bus or even catch a lift with one of your fellow students
walk to salford from bolton? i doubt that!

there is one of my mates in the area who also drives, so i think we'll probably split the petrol costs between us of driving...

thanks for your input so far everyone

I'll look into doing one over 3 yrs. Does anyone know any companies which offer good rates for students? Or would be willing to offer a loan for someone my age etc? At the moment i'm not sure where to start looking because some companies will probably refuse the loan on the fact that i'm a student alone.

    Thanks.

I did salford uni to leigh for three years whilst back to uni, yes it was abit of a bind getting the bus everyday at 7:30ish, when lectures started at 9. This was my only option, I didnt have a car. The bus services from bolton to salford are pretty good, or at least they used to be.

Plus the parking at salford uni a nightmare, you woud be better with an old car as its going to etc the odd bump in the car park, if you can find a space.

Spending money on a car which has a dealer warranty I don think is the answer, we have had couple of really good cars which have cost less than 2.5k and they have lasted five years plus with very little expense, besides the usual tyres, brake pads, exhaust etc.

Also I hope you live on the near side of bolton to get to salford uni in 15 mins, in rush hour this will take the best part of an hour, if you are coming from bolton central.

I hope you make the right decisions, for the right reasons - its no fun getting a new expensive used car and it being of the road for weeks at a time whilst it has expensive repairs.

    good luck

apprecaite your input mate - i live not far from the A666 motorway which takes me straight to salford, if i was to get a lift into the town centre for a bus (if they do one still - i wasn't aware of one) or train it would actually be more of a nightmare than just going up the road and getting straight onto the motorway

Although you're right about it being possible to get a good reliable runaround for a couple of grand less - your point about the more expensive car being off the road for weeks for expensive repairs is a bit baffling. Yes, with ANY car there is a chance of things going wrong - but lets be honest, the cheaper the car, the more likely it is to have problems - albeit minor ones. The fact that the dealer cars come with a warranty would indicate that they have faith that the car will be more or less problem free, at least for the length of it... it simply wouldn't come with a warranty otherwise...

I think many people would have stories that contradict that theory!
I think my tuition fees will be paid for, and i'll be getting a non-repayable grant which is upto £2750 a year. On top of that, if i need a student loan at any time i can obviously apply for one

You may wish to look at your grant/ loan entitlement again also. A living at home student with parents on a low income should get:

    Maintenance loan of £ 2,265
Fee loan of up to £ 3,070 - subject to the cost of your course
HE Maintenance Grant of £ 2,765

Your grant can obviously be used towards your fees, but it is not awarded as well as having your tuition fees paid.

Well all i can say is that he has made his mind up.
4.5k for a car nithing less even though in 3 years he will have 15k student debt.
Buses run from salford to bolton very frequent as i have a mate who has a car but catches the bus to bolton university from there.
I had a friend who bought a brand new car, with delivery miles and in 6 months it had a new engine in and all sorts so no guarentee.

£600 is a lot to spend in one year but my car is 14 years old, 92k on the clock and in the past year i have spent

    £30 for two tyres
    £40 for welding
    £50 for MOT
£60 for a new door and steering wheel to be fitted after it was broken in
    £3 for two new bulbs

The car cost me £500 and has full service history. 53k on a car is very low my friend got a s reg corsa, 1.0 with 35k for 1200 so id just look at what you can get for your money as citroens arnt the best cars around look at VW and toyota, ones with good record and slightly more expensive but you could pick up an excellent car for £1500 while a student!

I would seriously not recommend this.

I got a car (nissan micra) for uni, ok, I don't really need it at uni, but its very handy for travelling to/from home (130 miles away) and doing the house shopping, and getting to/from uni when I had to move out of the area for a few months.

I paid £1500 for it in May 04. Since then, it's got me through one year of provisional driving, 2.5 years of full license, and of 8-10k miles (at least) a year driving to/from uni, summer work, long drives for holidays etc.

Not once have I taken it to a main dealer for a service, and its got through every MOT so far just fine, with the exception of the last one (in June) which needed a touch of welding, total cost of that was £100.
Now, that signifies to me that it's probably not going to last more than another year or two, but thats fine. It's got me through getting the license, and it should get me through uni at least. After then, I'll probably consider something better.

Total cost of the car, inc purchasing, service/MOT (obviously excepting petrol and insurance) I've paid to date..hmm £1900, at the most, if that.

There is NO reason you need to buy a £4.5k car, or anything costing more than £2k for that matter, providing you pick a car sensibly.

Depending what course you do, you probably won't be in uni more than 2/3 days a week. Every summer since I've got this car, I've driven to and from work, the total amount of which is probably the same as you'll be spending driving to uni in the whole year, and again, that hasn't had any adverse effect on it.
