Cheapest home phone?

Currently spending over 20 pounds a month for BT phone line at home which is used to dial out about 3 times a month and receive the usual junk calls.

Is there anyway you can get a home phone line which is just for incoming calls? Or whats the cheapest line? I don't want broadband as I have Virgin Media for that (and gosh their phone lines are very expensive!)

Thanks

  • If you have broadband then get a Voice over IP (VoIP) phone line such as Sipgate Basic. Very low or no monthly rental and cheap outgoing calls.

How about a cheap payg mobile - The last time I used a landline for a voice call must have been a good decade ago as payg mobile is cheaper and more convenient.

    BT Basic, if you qualify?
Normally with VM the cost of not taking the phone service is nearly as much as if you do take a phone service, so have you actually checked with VM for a deal?
The issue is that even the cheapest voice service over a conventional landline requires you to pay line rental.

yes if you intend to stay with VM, then you would do well to look at using VM for a phone line too.

Their line rental saver packages are quite good. And if you select that it costs about the same as BB only.

We'd like to keep a "home" number as the more elderly in the family don't like ringing mobiles if they can help it... Not that they ring the home number very often!

When I checked the VM website they wanted an extra 30.08 per month plus 49.95 installation for the phone line - which seems very excessive. This is for Talk Weekends.

So you have no VM telephone socket where the VM connection comes in ?

line rental is about £17.99 (or less if paid in advance)

Ring them up and see what deal they can do

I have VM talk unlimited Phone + 50 mb internet and pay £31 pm.
  • Often on VM the "phone + broadband" deal they do is cheaper than "broadband only". Round my way it's £1 more expensive according to the mail I receive through my letterbox three times a month trying to get me to sign up.

It may be worth talking to them, 30 quid a month extra for a phone line seems very expensive when you're already with them for broadband.

That would be the wisest move, I agree.

For £21 per month, BT Home Phone Saver includes line rental, anytime inclusive calls to 01, 02 and 03 numbers, caller ID, voicemail 1571, half price (6p per minute instead of 12p) calls to mobile numbers and several other things. If you make any more than about 30 minutes of calls per month, this deal is cheaper than paying a per-minute rate for those calls on top of the standard £18 per month line rental.

How much per month do you spend on your mobile phone? Is there any way to cut back on what you spend on your mobile? Many people spend a fortune on their mobile making calls while they are at home - and those calls would have been cheaper if made from their landline. Can you cut your allowance back to cover what you use when away from home?
