Refund on a wedding dress

Do i have any rights & can I get a refund on a wedding dress. I was supposed to be getting married 6th Aug 2016 but had to cancel as we can't afford it in time. I bought my wedding dress in Feb 2015. I paid in full for the dress which included alterations & £100 extra to have it dry cleaned. I left the dress at the shop for them to look after. They told me the dress would be dry cleaned 2 months before the wedding. My step mum contacted the shop on the 5th January 2016 to tell them the wedding was cancelled & what could I do about the dress as I no longer needed it. They told her they don't buy back the dresses. My step mum went to the shop the next day to pick it up & asked for my money back for the dry cleaning to which they said it already had been 11 months before the wedding but couldn't provide her with a receipt to prove it. When my step mum gave me the dress it wasn't even in a proper bag & absolutely stank , musty. Upon further inspection it's filthy it's got black marks on it so it's definitely not been dry cleaned. Can I get my money back?

Sounds like you could argue getting the dry cleaning cost back but I wouldn't have thought a refund for the full dress price since that's not the shop's policy.

As you had alterations made to the dress you wouldn't be able to get a refund (unless the store you brought it from has it's own separate policy about this)

You say your mum gave u the dress, but not in a proper bag? Not to speak ill of her but could she have put it in a different bag and made it dirty herself? As you didn't see the dress yourself, the store could argue it was clean when it left them and must have gotten dirty before your step mum gave it to you. In any case your step mum should've checked the dress when she collected it, when any black marks would have been immediately obvious

  • Yes you should try to get the dry cleaning money back!

You have full right to ask for a refund. Just file a complaint at the consumer court and they will do the rest!
