Is there actually a gateline at Lewisham, or is it an open platform system there? If so, the reader may have been faulty and not beeped. If so the OP would be none the wiser. I've done the same and had to claim a refund after being charged the maximum fare.

Gateline put in around 2009, ostensibly to contribute to reduction in those travelling without a ticket. Possibly to increase revenue also..or is that me being cynical?

Are you thinking of Lewisham rail station? Lewisham DLR station is open and has no gateline.

Presumably reducing the number of people travelling without a ticket will increase revenue... unless there were loads of people travelling around the Lewisham area simply because they could get away with doing it for free.

OP - the thing is these inspectors don't work with common sense. they simply have revenue targets. so even though your card was already daily capped and could see that they didn't care.

That's true and they're very condescending too. It amazes me they're not directed to use discretion, it's not hard for them to understand genuine mistakes Vs fare evasion.

Acting more personably would do a world of good for their company and personal PR as the majority of Londoners (speaking on behalf of everyone now ;)) don't have a favourable opinion of TFL, for a number of reasons I'm sure you can guess.

Strictly speaking, genuine mistake = penalty fare, fare evasion = prosecution.

Ok, but that's a case in point. Ticket officers are intelligent people, able to reason, apply logic and discretion. Like teachers do, court judges, police.

"Strictly speaking" is a lazy attitude to circumstances relating to large fines relative to the "offense".

A genuine mistake should be considered and if, for example you've already capped out and traveled 100 metres that is different to if you've traveled from Ealing to Epping and not capped out.

I suppose whatever the system someone is always going to feel aggrieved! This time it's me :rotfl:

Ah, maybe bunjus. I know Lewisham rail station has platforms for DLR but didn't know there's a separate DLR station. Having said that I've only ever travelled through Lewisham on the mainline so maybe that's correct.

It's a separate station, it's downstairs with its own tap in/out machines. I know to my cost!

It's kind of semi-separate. The DLR platforms are numbered 5 & 6, while the mainline platforms are 1-4. But I think it's more accurate to call them adjacent but separate stations. You can't go directly between DLR and mainline platforms without crossing the gateline.
