Hi guys
I'm a bit new here so apologies if this come across wrong.
My ex partner has just rang me saying argos re sending the baillifts round unless she pays the interest on her account. I just payed it and found out she owes them £380. No biggie as I will pay this. But then she tells me she owes santander £350 and a pay day lender £400.
How the hell does this happen? How do these companies and bank give credit and overdrafts to someone with no means of in one other than income support! I will sort this mess out but if anyone got any advice what to do here I would be grateful!
Regards
Scott

Hi Scott,
Argos are not the county court, and cannot "send the bailiffs round", that's not how it works.
I assume your referring to a debt collector, something completely different.
I also have to ask why your paying your ex's debts for her ?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. I think your ex might be tugging at your strings a bit.... Argos don't "send bailiffs out" so if that is what your ex said, it's either inaccurate - or intentionally over-dramatic sounding.
What is your particular interest/motivation in actually paying these for him/her? Are they trying to suggest that if you don't help pay these bailiffs will be showing up at your address? If so, unless you are named on these debts it won't matter if bailiffs show up - they can do nothing to you if these debts aren't yours.
Be very careful your ex isn't playing you here....0 -
...And instead of asking "why do big companies give out credit to someone on low income" - perhaps instead ask, "why is someone with a low income buying things on credit - and then phoning me up, lying to me about possible consequences to me, trying and get me to pay them?"0
-
Big banks like Santander generally don't lend to people with no income. I'm not sure if they take into account income support when considering affordability. It's possible that your ex lied to get credit.
Either way, your ex is responsible for her own actions. She took out credit while unemployed - it's no surprise she can't repay it. It doesn't seem fair to put all the blame on banks and companies.
If you pay all her debts for her, she has every incentive to run up debts again.0 -
Because if I don't then my sons life will suffer!
I'm not going to have that!0 -
Trust me if she does it again, she can get herself put of it!
She didn't get a loan, they gave her a overdraft!0 -
She not playing me, If anything she been trying to hide it from me.
Argos basically said of she does pay £90 today they will send it to a debt collection agency. Which means Bailifts.
Santander does not want to set up a repayment plan to help her pay it off.
And I won't tell you what I called her when I found out about the short term loan!
It unprintable!0 -

Ah,
As a divorced dad of 3, I suspected emotional blackmail may be involved.
It's a tricky one I understand that.
Only thing I can say to you is if she's done this once, she'll do it again.
You do not want bailing her out of her financial troubles to become a regular event.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. No it doesn't, common misconception.
Only a court can instruct bailiffs, and then only after obtaining a CCJ, and her defaulting on it.
She is a million miles away from that scenario.
A debt collection agency has no more power than you or I do.
You should not bow to what a creditor tells you on the phone, you should not even speak to them on the phone.
A better option would be to write offering a payment plan to each creditor, it's unlikely to be refused when presented correctly.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards.
