Should I put my name on the mortgage?

I moved in to my husband's house 4 years ago just before we married. I pay half of all household bills and the mortgage. Is there any benefit to having my name on the mortgage and having joint ownership?

Thanks

    Yes, of course!
You are contributing to half the mortgage so if the worst happens and you split up, you should get half of any rise in equity from the point you moved in. Get yourself on the deeds now!

  • Yes, it means that if you fall on hard times, the building society can chase both of you for full payment of the mortgage.

I don't think that makes any difference. As the wife, whatever she is entitled will not affected by whose name is on the deeds. The benefits are all for the lender.

Well, I suppose it would stop the OP's husband raising a new mortgage without her knowledge.

    Isn't love a wonderful thing?

  • I agree with GG - Gotobed probably already has a beneficial interest in the property simply because they're married.

By going on to the mortgage, she can then be pursued for the debt, if they fall on hard times.

Even if hubby remortgaged, this would not affect Gotobed's beneficial interest - unless he raised equity in the property and spent it on a wild week in Bangkok

Many thanks. I haven't put my name on as I saw no benfits really but people in my staff room shook theirs heads and told me that I HAD to be on there.

It seems all WIVES are on their HUSBAND'S mortgage. Is it true that the first person on the mortgage is really the owner?

Tee hee, I made sure I was first on our mortgage as I work for the solicitor who was doing our conveyancing. Don't think it makes a blind bit of diff.

We ain't married though, so don't really relate to your question.
