Season Tickets

If I buy a yearly season ticket (with a discount through work) that goes from London to out to Essex. But then I move to Essex. Can I still use the ticket to go into London?

My worry is, if I got the discount on my season ticket because I am using it to travel to work but then midway through the year I move closer to work so don't actually need the season ticket for work travel anymore. Can I still use it the other way to go and visit friends etc in London?

Am I just paying for train journeys between two locations and can use it anytime, going either way? Or am I paying for journeys out of London in the AM and back to London in the PM?

Does that make sense?

Thanks for any advice!

I don't know the answer to your question, which I guess might depend on the ticket you have, but I have to ask why you would keep a season ticket that you're no longer using on a regular basis - surely it would be more sensible to turn it in for a refund and buy the tickets to London as and when you need them?

Your season ticket is valid either way, any time.

If you move you can usually sell back the remaining time on the ticket.

Another option if you move, is to change your current season ticket for one that is more appropriate.

Because I get a good discount with the season ticket through my job and would be coming back in often enough to see family friends that it would still be worth having. Ie no more expensive than buying a few off peak tickets a week, but also give me the flexibility to come in more often if needed and not have to worry about buying tickets!

    Ok, great.

But I think it might work out well to keep it if I'm allowed!

That's the point though, if I did that I wouldn't be able to get the discount through my job. The discount is there for people who do the commute. If I changed it, I doubt they'd give me the discount still. I've not asked though, and am not sure I want to flag it up!

Well if the discount is tied to the commute surely when you tell them your new address they will be able to work out that you aren't doing the commute any more so the discount will no longer apply.

I will have already applied though. When I first buy the season ticket I have to give the train company proof of where I work. And then I get a percentage off the total because of it. The season ticket is for a year so if it can be used both ways whenever I want then it should be fine.

That's why I asked if a season ticket is tied into going in a certain direction - in my case out of London and back again. I wasn't sure if the opposite route would be more expensive, as I assume going into London at peak times is more expensive that leaving?
