It's not rocket science, if you were near me I'd offer to teach you.
    It's a 'career' I considered doing once, but realised I don't like kids :)

I always tell people: forget "learning to swim". Concentrate first purely on being able to float on the spot.... that's the main thing about swimming, it's not sinking ... then moving forward.

Once you can float you'll have the confidence and can work out for yourself how to wave your arms about that makes you move. Just get yourself into the water and simply say to yourself "I'm not here to swim, I'm just here to learn to float as long as I can" Takes the pressure off, makes it easy/achievable - and before you know it you're then swimming.

That is interesting, but does it work for everybody? Especially skinny men. I was quite skinny when I learned to swim and I learned using waterwings and stomach floats with the buoyancy being gradually reduced as I progressed. I found that I really had to be able to make progress with improving my stroke before finally discarding the buoyancy. If I took off the buoyancy too soon, I just sank.
  • I think I'm with PasturesNew on this. I worked as a lifeguard and was in a swim club when younger and used to coach the babies. The biggest problem people have is drag (I mean aside from people who are genuinely frightened or adverse to water on the face)- it's what makes people inefficient in the water. If you can keep your butt and midsection up near the surface of the water and then just keep arms and legs moving you're sorted.
