You are but you're the closest so far. You're not so far out at all.

The correct answer is £30,000 which is the PAYE you'd pay on an income of about £100,000.

No, I am 'the closest so far' as I am right! The problem was your question was not detailed enough.

Your question was 'how much does it cost to be a non-dom?'. Unless I am missing something, with the £30K you are talking about the first level of the Remittance Basis Charge (RBC) and I really don't understand your example above. There is then £50K and the new £90K (which will disappear). However, not all 'non-doms' have to pay this, only after they have been here for a certain length of time and not always then. A non-dom who has been resident in the UK for 20 years but who has non-UK income of under £2K is not penalised at all for being a 'non-dom', so it costs him or her nothing.

Somebody who has been here not long enough to pay the RBC may lose their personal allowance as a 'non-dom' claiming the remittance basis with non-UK income of over £2K. It would then cost them (in 15/16) £2,120 (as a basic-rate taxpayer) or £4,240 (as a higher-rate taxpayer).

In short, the cost of being a 'non-dom' in 2015/16 is either nothing, £2,120, £4,240, £30,000 or £50,000 (as the £90K isn't in force yet).

Sorry, I felt you needed correcting! :D

I 'antobused' and it ranges from 30k to 90k depending on how many years you have been non dom for so everyone is close....

Are you claiming the credit for inventing a new verb?

Correct away! I do literally minutes of research to put this together so it is remarkable that I don't get more of my answers wrong.

Most years I get told I'm asking the wrong questions so I'm doing well on that basis.:T

For all I know Antrobus is actually just someone who happens to have a good memory for economic detail.

I do know that in many threads he is he one who lets the facts get in the way of a 'good' discussion, something I am very grateful for.
    I think....

I'm quite chuffed by the idea that I might one day inspire an entry in the OED. Although I'd quite perplexed by how it can ever be the case that the "discovery of facts" can somehow be "unethical".:)

That's actually quite a perceptive comment. When I had a career, it was dominated by numbers, and in particular by an ability to remember (roughly speaking) what the numbers were.

And there is no way I would be answering a question as to the level of the Remittance Basis Charge for non-doms, because I know what the bl00dy answer is. There is no reason why I should. I just do.:)

Yea, I know. I do apologise. So many interesting dipsutes about whether x is y or not, and then I come along, tell 'em the answer, and spoil the fun.:)

I'm sure the Stazi and KGB had very strong views about which facts were ethical and which were not back in the day.

Thank you for joining in the quiz. It would be rubbish without people trying to (or in your case succeeding to) answer the questions.

Day 12 upcoming. You might need to antrobus this one ;)

No offence intended, I meant "unethical" in the sense of not complying with Generali's rules of the game. As noted you may have a good memory and not be at all guilty of antobuse! :)
