Setting up a website to make money

Hi and Happy New Year to everyone!!
I have some ideas and blogs with which I want to set up a website, although am a bit confused as to whether to use a site like blogger.com or whether to buy a domain. Can anyone advise which would be the better?
I am also looking into affiliates with which to make some money and aside from Amazon, I am not sure where else to go.
Grateful for any pointers and thanks for reading

I have thought about this and there are loads of affiliate schemes out there - http://www.tradedoubler.com/uk-en/publishers/get-started/ for example.
The problem I have is coming up with enough content, and content that I would be able to keep fresh and up to date, to drive enough traffic to the site. Remembering that you're competing with sites like Money Saving Expert... have you got a good idea (which I appreciate you might not want to share!)?0 -
I use Affiliate Window, Webgains, Commission Junction and Ratuken. I make a small but regular income from affiliate marketing and have done for years. You need to create the blog or website first and then sign up to some of these sites. Once you've joined you can apply to different advertisers to join their programs and then it's just question of advertising their products.
I have my own domain but you can do it from a blog.Don't mess with pensioners. :cool:0 -
I would suggest you buy a domain. That is what I did 18 months ago. I only spent about £12 the first year and I made more than that back the first month.
Best of luck with your venture

I've been looking into this recently, as I began self-teaching CSS and HTML on my lunch breaks at work and am at the point that I think I could easily build myself a blog using bootstrap.
Saying that, I understand using a Wordpress enabled host / domain would be better in terms of the plugins etc that it gives you.
From what I've read, you need to find a niche and write original content; thats what I'm struggling with, I can't think of what to do. My main hobby is gaming but it has been done to death.
Katykicker that's impressive, what does your website cater to? I've read your posts from time to time on this board and your earnings at home have continued to shoot up!
Edit: I looked at GoDaddy. I'm new to all of this, but it looks good. There's an offer at the moment, around £14 for 12 months of hosting, a domain name, and an email address, e.g. "info@yoursite.co.uk".0 -
My website is designed to talk about my online earnings, my successes and failures. I've been doing it for about 18 months now and I really enjoy it. I also share recipes and things too. Just whatever I fancy really!

For the sake of a few quid you might as well buy the domain, you then have more control over the content and methods of monetising the site.Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080

Godaddy is pretty good value, 1&1 are cheap depending on the suffix. I think they are doing .co.uk for a £1 at the moment.
Promotion is tricky, but if you write a good blog then other bloggers may swap links. Good blogs will attract traffic over time, if you have a "niche" then that can also help.
No easy answers though as there's a lot of competition.Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080 -
Evening all.
I'm at the design phase of my new website. I used Go Daddy for the whole lot and it seems to be going well. I think I spent £45ish for a years worth of domain name, hosting, email and website builder. I'm in the process of getting my affiliate links on there and am doing lots of research into it. I think I have found quite a good idea and every time I log onto to design a bit more of my website new ideas come up. It's not a blog, just a site that people can go to. I don't want to give to much away. It's not going to make me millions, but a bit of extra cash would be nice, and I'm treating it like a hobby.
Good luck with your site/blog. I think getting your own web address is the best way forward. It will feel more yours if that makes sense?0 -

I'm going to start looking into buying a domain this weekend. GoDaddy looks good, did you get the Wordpress enabled builder? Everybody seems to rave about Wordpress plugins.
I've managed to find a complete niche that I know attracts thousands of searches a year so I'm just biding my time 😁0
