in Cutting tax
Hello,
Help would be fablous please!
Basically I have a full time job in a hospital and get taxed there.
In 2013 I got an extra job where I do interviews on the side. Tax for this job is taken from my wages every month on top of my other full time job tax (hospital)
Now as my income from this job is less than 2500 HMRC have told me on their website and one other person on the phone that I dont need to fill in a tax return.
BUT when I rang up other times they are telling me that I do need to fill out a tax return AND have even given me fine....this does not make sense.
Any thoughts?
Thank you!

You need to complete a tax return if HMRC issue one to you.
If you have a fine you must have been registered for self assessment and been sent a tax return or a notice to file one.
There may be some other reason for you to complete a self assessment return
https://www.gov.uk/self-assessment-tax-returns/who-must-send-a-tax-return
If none of these apply then ask HMRC why you have been sent one.0 -
If you have two jobs that both have tax deducted at source I cannot think why you would need to submit a tax return and can certainly think of no reason why you'd need to voluntarily register for self assessment.
However as the post above says, HMRC can ask anyone to submit a tax return and will do so by sending you a formal notice to submit one. Once you have this, then unless you can ring them and convince them to withdraw that notice (as it may have been sent in error) then you have to submit it by the deadline or you will get an automatic £100 fine.
I'm not sure HMRC just hand our fines to people over the phone so I think you may have misunderstood the person you spoke to.
The most important questions for you to answer:
* Have you at any point been sent a notice to file a tax return by HMRC?
* If you have! when did you receive it and for which tax year?
* What made you even think you might need to do a return before you rang up HMRC?0 -
I was in a similar situation and for several years had to fill in tax returns. They were taking higher rate tax from the second job at source so each year was a refund.
But after I'd been doing both jobs for 2 years, HMRC declared I didn't need to fill in another tax return. But they kept taking tax at higher rate. So I made sure I still did a tax return.0
