Beetroot and red Urine

Help
Had roasted beetroot 24 hours ago and am now passing red urine. Is this normal? No other pain or symptoms but I have low stomach acid. Very frightened about it. Happened once before but not this degree

LindaMary, the forum is not the place for medical advice.
If you are concerned call NHS24 and get proper advice.

It can also give you purply pink poo.
  • Perfectly normal - google "beeturia" for an explanation!

But if you are still concerned, seek medical advice.

maybe you ate more this time.
if still the same after 24 hours go to the docs.

Too much asparagus can make your wee more green. some foods just flow through you quite literally.

This is what puts me off eating beetroot! It's about the only vegetable (bar brussels sprouts) that never gets eaten in my house.

Asparagus can make your pee smell weird, but I don't think it's harmful.

I'm a bit jealous, I've never had dramatic beetroot wee, no matter how much I've eaten.

    Asparagus is really interesting.

When people with a certain gene eat it, their pee smells funny. BUT it needs a different gene to be able to smell the funny smelling wee!!

So some people both produce, and can smell the wee.

Some produce smelly wee but can't smell it.

Some people can smell it, but don't produce it!

And some neither produce it, or can smell it!!!

To know which one you are for sure though - unless you both produce and can smell - you will need a 'friend' who you know for sure can produce and smell!! :D:D
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

How can you smell something you haven't produced?

If you have the misfortune to be a 'smeller' who follows a 'producer' into the bathroom in an 'if it's yellow let it mellow' house, you will smell it.

The B vitamins, especially in high dose supplements, can give extremely lurid yellow wee.
