Increasingly badly named. Oh well. Normally it ends early. Hopefully this won't end up as the 1 Day of Lent Quiz.

    So, Q9.
When did the current income tax regime come into play (i.e. since when have income taxes been collected continuously)? What was the original rate?

To give you a clue, if your answer if Napoleon was alive on the year you give you are wrong.

Also bear in mind that the income tax rate is given as pence in the pound not a %age traditionally (probably not any more....country going to the dogs....chunter...splutter) and there has not always been 100p in the pound.

Day 8 was Deutsche (I gave the answer further up and a link to an article on Forbes that I found interesting.

Day 9, which I have started a new thread for which I should have done originally, was probably after a war. There were a lot of them at the time.

I'm going to guess 1860ish and 10d. I can imagine that as Victorian England was expanding and the Empire growing with lots of wars going on we'd need the extra income by then.

10d is a complete stab in the dark, but that would be around 5% which sounds about reasonable.

All the Investment Banks do I suspect.

In my work I am part of a committee that looks at companies that we can't invest in because they behave in an unethical way. We screen out companies that make cigarettes and !!!!!! and a bunch of other stuff automatically but we can also blacklist specific companies too for egregious behaviour.

I found this about Deutsche because I was researching another well known bank that had done some crappy stuff that some committee members wanted to blacklist. TBH I think you either lump investment banks in with cigarettes, !!!!!!, cluster bombs and child slavery or you invest in them. It's quite depressing as I spent a long time working in investment banks and made some great friends there.

    Oh well.

In one respect they are worse.

Cigarette companies might kill their customers but they do at least obey the rule of law. Investment banks just run roughshod over all this and it really upsets me, as a former investment banker, that these £$%£ers aren't in prison and instead have used shareholder money to buy their way out of gaol!

Ooooh when I rule the world there are going to be a few Investment Bankers in the stocks for starters and if you think a couple of nights in the stocks was an easy option you should think about spending two nights in winter, held locked in a stress position in a place that had no tomatoes but did have plenty of rocks and buckets of wee .
