PS4 Some questions

Right, I've had my PS4 since Sunday and having not had any form of gaming system since the <cough> Commodore 64 its proving quite a learning curve.
Firstly the most annoying thing. I have 5 games, Fallout 4, Drive Club, Battlefront, Grand theft Auto and Destiny. I've installed them so would assume that I wouldn't need to swap discs every time I wanted to play one of the games.... but I do. What am I dong wrong? or this an annoying anti-piracy measure to pee off those that have paid for a genuine copy?
In my day you had a joystick with at most 2 buttons. I now find the PS4 has 12 buttons and 2 joysticks. Most games don't obviously tell you what they all do and there are precious few written instructions. Where can I get decent instructions for games?
I've currently started Fallout 4 and mess around with Drive Club (free practice 2 laps of silverstone but it never seems to end ie. you can do 20 laps) but can't see how to pause them mid play without going to the main menu via the Playstation button between the 2 joysticks and quitting the application.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

its to stop you installing the game and then selling it, you've done nothing wrong. The only way round it is to buy them from the psn store as a digital download, but you won't be able to sell or trade it in if you want to. The install is because there is so much data in a game nowadays it would run very slowly if it were to access the disc all the time. With a lot of data being installed it speeds the game up immeasurably.

most games have a tutorial as the first level to learn the game from, but gone are the days that games have a manual. You'll find as you go that most games of the same type have the same buttons for the same actions, eg a driving game will have the accelerator and brake buttons the same, but this doesn't apply to all games.

not sure on this as I sold my ps4 a little while ago, but maybe try the options button?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Lol. I've given up after too long as a teenager on the N64 and SNES, no matter how hard I try on my Xbox 360 (£25 2nd hand with a bag of games) I just cant get used to it, tempted to get another N64 and just go back to playing Golden eye.
I too grew up with the Commodores, Vic 20's, BBC's etc- happy days.0 -
Theres actually 15 buttons and 2 Joysticks (both clickable by pressing down) and a controller touchpad that is clickable on the PS4 controller so you have to play about with it to find the 1 for pause or menu also sometimes theres a youtube guide on how to play the game also I have a 2 metre usb cable for my controller when I play games because the battery is not that goodLet them eat cake (Marie Antoinette 1765)0

I believe if you hit "options" that is essentially the pause button on the majority of games - I'll back that up by saying don't shoot me if I'm wrong, it's an Xbox One I have!
The instructions issue is a pain in the backside, but in an attempt to "reduce waste" games largely go with an online manual these days. The actual game menu will often give you a run down of the controls & any situational bumph you'll need to know such as the controls for in vehicles etc. (I only say it's a pain in the backside because that's where I used to plank the receipts for games - you so rarely look at the instruction manuals that it's usually safe as houses!)Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -
Re tutorials, as mentioned most games will talk you through the controls in the first few minutes. In fact, modern games are often criticised by being too easy to figure out. They lead the player almost in a step by step manner, showing objectives, waypoints, hints etc etc etc.
Worth mentioning, shops like Game sell guide books for more popular, bigger titles too. I've been a gamer since 8-bit era and have no troubles using modern gamepads, no matter how many buttons they have. It's just a case of getting used to them, that's all.0 -
Strategy guides are a little redundant though these days, for years there's been web based guides for games & these days if you're ever stuck YouTube generally has a video guide.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0

I agree, the game guides are a con when it's all on the Internet.0 -
Ahhhh, the Commodore 64, my first computer when I was 8 years old.
Things have moved on a lot since then Mr_Singleton. For pausing games mid play on ps4 you usually have to press either the 'options' button, or the big touchpad in the middle actually clicks in if you push on that too. You will find most games use one of those for pause.
Also, most games these days don't come with any instruction booklets etc either. If you are struggling to grasp the controls, there is usually a guide in the pause menu, usually under 'controls'.This is WAY more fun than monopoly.0 -
The Options button (which is the small button just to the right of the central pad) acts as the pause button on every game I've played. Don't worry, the controls become second nature after a few months. Currently playing Star Wars battlefront and find I need a third hand sometimes though.0
