Question about gel nails

Hi

I got a DIY gel nail kit for Christmas and I love it. If you have gel nails do you ever go back to your natural nails or do you keep the gel on all the time?

Just wondering if it eventually wrecks your natural nails and if you should give them a rest occasionally.

I also read a tip about putting normal glitter polish over the top of your gel nails if they are starting to grow out or chip a little. Is this something anyone here does?

You asked if Gels will eventually wreck your nails, unfortunately yes applying Gels from a DIY kit and not having any training in nail enhancements will cause nail damage, nail thinning and what we call "greenies" which is a fungal infection on the nail which is caused by improper application allowing dirt, moisture etc to get inbetween the natural nail and the Gel.

Incorrect removal will also cause nail damage as this will take layers off your natural nail plate.
With proper application and removal there is no need at all to have a break from L&Ps or Gels.

with regards to using glitter polish to cover up chips or grow out, this isnt a good idea as this could also cause problems with glitter getting beneath the gel through cracks and lifting and causing an infection.
If you are going to go ahead with the kit please read up as much as possible first, and be meticulous with your prep making sure your natural nails are squeaky clean and oil free before you begin, also do not allow the gel to touch the cuticle or sidewalls.
  • i've been doing my own gel nail polish for just over 2 years now, with only a few weeks break with no polish. i use cuticle/nail oil daily & my nails are longer & in better condition than they ever have been.

i mainly use gelish polish which can last up to 21 days with no wear on me & CND acetone remover. be gentle when removing, never scrape the polish off, let the acetone do it's job, & you shouldn't have any issues :)
