A drop in house prices can occur as a result of poor economy but rising house prices does not equal an improving economy.

    Chickens eggs correlation and causation

Falling house prices going hand in hand with mass redundancies and an economy down in the dumps. You think that was a coincidence? :)

Where were the mass redundancies? Financial sector was in turmoil not the broader economy.

In London period homes with gardens will only become greater in demand. You can build up but you can't magic a garden from nowhere.

there arent that many people interested in gardens what they like from period homes is that they tend to be closer to town and transport and sometimes they tend to be bigger

give me a 150 sqm well built apartment over a 50 sqm period terrace anyday. But if the option is a 50 sqm apartment or a 150 sqm period home then Ill take the latter

oh and there is the social engineering people dont like. The period properties are all owned while the flats (at least in London) are closer to 50% social so two idential flats one in a block of all owners and another with half and half and the owner block (especially in time) will be valued higher than its twin down the road

the correlation might not be 100% but it will be a decent link.

didn't unemployment go up from below 2 million to nearly 3 million?

also a lot of people where I used to work who were 50-64 went from employment straight to early retirement from the company pension scheme so I assume they would not count as unemployed although they lost their jobs

Things change, tower blocks are fashionable once again, a few more burning tower block films and they will fall back out of fashion.

Whilst the garden will increasingly become sought after as it offers the chance to build down as technology becomes cheaper to do so.
Proudly voted remain. A global union of countries is the only way to commit global capital to the rule of law.

    I think its quite simple,
    people buy location
    then class of neighbours
    then space
    then cost of upkeep
then trivialities like gardens or garages or a particular design or look

the old council tower blocks often failed in all counts. however if a tower block in built in a good central location (like tower hamlets near both the city and canary wharf) and it has no social housing in the block and the apartments are of a big space and the service charge and ground rent a reasonable then it will be popular

The proposed conservative s106 being changed from requiring developers to make half their stock social housing (in london) to instead selling half of the stock to FTBs at a discount will further improve tower blocks as the "class of neighbours" should improve quite a lot.

also I recall reading some stats about other nations and some countries go almost fully apartments. eg Turkey and China are two examples were it is close to 98% apartments (and the small number of houses would be in places were its not really possible to build apartments eg in small villages with small populations)

However in Turkeys case they tend to be massive (by uk standards) eg 200 sqm apartments whereas uk flats are closer to 65 sqm. Often built only 2-4 to a floor unlike the uk where they try to cram in 10 or more leaving only one aspect with windows.

Try bringing up a kid without a garden.

Empty show boxes are great for investors but what we all really want is a nice house in a nice neighbourhood with a nice garden with good transport to get to a good job.

Watch period homes hold their price when high rises tank.
