Help please with tax code

Please can anyone advise if my husband's tax code is correct?

His State Pension became payable from 7th November this year. Up to then, he received Carers Allowance. He has an occupational pension too, but no other income.

He has had a total of just over £1900 Carers Allowance, from 5 April 2015 till State Pension began on 7 November, when CA was stopped.

His State Pension, from 7 November to 5 April, will be a total of £2796. However, HMRC say it is £6924, which is the amount of SP payable for the entire year.

Obviously this is an amount he will not receive because his SP entitlement only began on 7 November.

He phoned HMRC and they insist his tax code of 175L is correct because they take into account the whole year's SP even though he won't be getting it!

He doesn't understand this at all.

Can anyone advise please?

It is correct because they apply his new tax code on a Month 1 basis ( in other words just 1/12th ) which means he will only pay the correct amount of tax going forward from now. It will not take extra tax from the previous months.

Thank you jem. It's a bit clearer to me now.
