The problem is: people write on forums like this believing that any misused form of the language is acceptable. This is in opposition to the fact that writing a lengthy screed such as the one highlighted is done in the hope of receiving helpful comments. This is inherently difficult given that we don't know the whole background to the incident being described, we can't get into the writer's emotional state or mindset. The reason for writing is to be read and understood. Very difficult here.

I have to say Pollycat, you sure like to use the 'roll-eyes' smiley don't you? I actually thought that smiley was prohibited on here. That's why they took it off. (I can see you got yours from the internet and not from here.)

Are you aware that the roll-eyes smiley is prohibited on here?

Probably best to use it a lot less. Not only is it prohibited, but also, it's a bit rude to keep using it. It's an obnoxious smiley. It's OK now and again, but you use it a LOT. You must do, or I wouldn't have noticed.

Here's another NINE examples I found (in addition to the one in the first message I quoted; ^^^ ) and they are just from the last WEEK!

As I said, it's probably a good idea to review how often you use this smiley.

Just a bit of friendly advice.

funniest post I've read all weekend, wish I knew how to do the "prohibited" smilley, I'd litter the whole post with them :rotfl:
Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama ;)

I always wondered where the roll eye smiley was. I think it needs to make a come back! :rotfl:

    I agree. I loved it!

I wonder why it's socially acceptable to be irked by somebody's SPAG but not their poor maths skills?

In a similar vein I've often wondered why it seems socially acceptable to almost boast 'I can't do maths'. Yet you rarely hear anyone boasting about being illiterate (although some on this thread are getting close;)).

Interesting correction of your grammar Petra. Albeit, fitting correctly. The requisit within your post regarding the 2010 abolishment of the aforementioned smiley is somewhat bewildering? Can you perhaps provide a rational explanation as to how a person registered Five years after the abolishment of the aforementioned smiley has knowledge about the smiley being prohibited?

When you, the notorious AE troll who has lurked on this board for over Five years becomes over confident. You start making mistakes. We know all of your other AE's. We are Anonymous. We are legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us.

    Hi Petra_71.

I'd just like to welcome you to the MSE forum. :grouphug:

Actually, I'm a tad confused - given your comments in the final paragraph of your post - why you 'thanked' Petra_70's post # 234.

Is it acceptable to correct the grammar in the words of pop songs?

When I hear Do Wa Diddy Diddy Dum Diddy Dum, I remind the group that it is 'were' not 'was'.
Elvis, and the Pet Shop Boys have to be reminded that it is 'well' not 'good' in 'You were always on my Mind'

No matter how often I yell at them, they never correct it!

Even worse, I've found myself itching to correct classics and always want to say 'I must go down to the sea again'!
'I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my father. Not screaming and terrified like his passengers.' (Bob Monkhouse).

    Sky? Believe in better.

Note: win, draw or lose (not 'loose' - opposite of tight!)

Maybe these 2 suggestions will give the OP something else to do rather than "seething on the inside" when she reads something on here that doesn't live up to her standards on s/p/g.
