Can mobile phone companies keep charging month by month after you cancelled the direct debit? And can online movie companies such as netflix, now tv and amazon prime keep charging you monthly after changing bank accounts and send you a bill for thousands many years later?

If you signed a 2 year contract for a mobile phone then you'll owe the money for those 2 years as per the agreement. Cancelling the direct debit will stop the physical money going out of your bank account, but the debt will remain owing and they will likely chase you for it.
Best to sort out out as soon as possible, delay or ignore it and they'll carry on charging you or add other charges/get debt collectors involved.
Amazon prime is a yearly thing but can be canceled if you haven't used it (there is a guide on here somewhere). Netflix and Now TV will just stop allowing you access to their services if you don't pay - i think they are just monthly rolling subscriptions/no contract as such - if you don't pay, you can't watch.0 -
Cancelling direct debts does not cancel the contract where mobile phones and pay to view tv subscriptions are concerned.
You normally cancel a contract in writing, giving 30 days notice, but you will still be liable for the minimum term as stated above.
Quite a common misconception amongst some people having a contact such as this for the first time and not been fully aware of what there signing up for.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards.
