Should I expect "final" statements from a CC company?

Hi,
I had a small windfall recently which I used to make myself debt free (except for a mortgage, I cleared 3 card debts). Anyway, I wanted to close two of the accounts (with Barclays) and keep one for now in case of emergencies - I haven't spent on credit for years so no danger of me misusing it.
I made my final payments online for the two Barclays accounts and awaited the next statement confirming that the balance was cleared so I could close them. I got a statement for one but not the other so called them up yesterday.
The (very polite) man I spoke to said that both the accounts were "already closed", despite me not actually asking for this to happen (I had just paid off the full balance). I clarified this but he was insistent that they had been closed and that they would not normally write and tell me this.
This seemed pretty weird to me, either this guy didn't know what he was looking at or had been instructed to be confusing to stop accounts being closed?
Obviously I want them shown as closed on the credit files so I can check that in a few weeks, but I just wanted to see if anyone else had either had this happen or could confirm whether I would normally expect to get written confirmation that my account had been closed?
Many thanks.

Hi,
Your best bet is to drop them a short letter asking them to confirm wether the account is closed, or not.
I always find it very flustrating talking to a call handler, as they are only as good as the information available to them, which is usually wrong !!
