Personalising a Painting overall for DD's school

Options
Hi there

i am not sure if this is the correct forum but here goes.

My DD is starting school this september and as part of her school uniform she needs to have a painting overall. We have already bought this however the overall needs to have her name printed/embroidered on the front of the overall.

How can I do this? The overall is made from nylon so I cannot use the iron-on stuff.

any ideas please :confused::confused::confused:

I would either use the sew-in name tapes or I would write her name with a black permanent marker pen.
  • I would buy some 3d fabric paint (it's in little tubes with nozzles) and write on it with that. I've done DD's plimsolls and lunchbag this year.
Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )
Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)

i have considered the permanent marker route but I was just wondering if there was a more elegant way of doing this.

We used to have to embroider our names in chain stitch on our school science overalls, school bags etc. It's a very quick and easy stitch to do -you can probably find instructions online or a book of embroidery stitches in your local library.Just write the name lightly in pencil then embroider over it.
  • ooooh! oooh!! we used to have to do this as well! the first couple of cookery lessons were spent doing chainstitch!!
you could also try using embroidery cotton ( about 30p a skein I think) and just doing backstitch, maybe doubled if it shows up better.
( we learnt the different stitches at Junior school, do they have time to do this now or am I showing my age?)
  • Oh gosh - I remember doing the chain-stitch thing at school too (shortly before suffering the indignity of being 'unpicked' by the teacher after discovering that I'd embroidered my apron to my school skirt... :) )

Tippex makes a good alternative to permanent marker on a dark background - I use this a lot to mark my younger kids' stuff. I always thought it was like some kind of liquid paper and would just dissolve when washed. That was before my boys kindly tippex-ed virtually everything in my front room when they were toddlers and I was upstairs putting the laundry away one day. I think dynamite would have a hard job removing it, never mind washing :)
Eek! Someone's stolen my signature!

will embroidering the name not cause the overall to start ripping, as I said before it is made out of nylon. sorry for being ignorant

just reading about fabric paints, it seems that once painted, it needs to be "fixed" by ironing on the paint. This will not really work as the ironing will melt the overall....
