Help Turkey drama!

I am at a loss as to what to do and hoping someone is on here wiser than I.

I had to have a little op yesterday. All fine, home and straight to bed as was not with it. Christmas was all sorted. I had arranged for the turkey to be delivered and all veg prepped.

Turkey duly delivered from local farm, husband opens fridge and decides it won't fit. So he cooked it. He then wrapped it in foil and left it all night in the oven. Oven was turned off. I know he meant well I'm not cross or angry about it. However I have no idea what to do now?

I came down at 5.30 to put Turkey on to find it already cooked. Rather a ta dah moment!!
He left it in the oven as a) he couldn't get it in the fridge and b) on the sides the cats & dogs would have had it. It was still warm. I took it out and popped it in the larder. But, I have never cooked a turkey the day before and I don't know what to do. How do I make it safe to eat?

I have looked online. British turkey say it's a no no to cook turkey the day before. Others say it's fine, cover in gravy & roast. Nobody in this house eats gravy though. American sites recommend deep frying or microwaving. Yuck to deep frying it.

My daughters been called into work in a hospital so dinner is now postponed till 8.30pm.

I probably sound like an idiot but I am genuinely concerned - I really don't want to poison my family.

Thank you & Merry Christmas.

PS. Fridge is full as they all had nibbles/sandwiches yesterday , put leftovers on plates and then put ALL the plates in the fridge.

At relatives house, cooked turkey is kept in larder overnight then used for Boxing Day and 27th and noones been poisoned yet.
If you're reheating it I'd suggest cutting off and thoroughly reheating the bits you're going to use rather than the whole thing, but otherwise I think it should be ok. It's no different to roasting a chicken and using the leftovers.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Thank you so much. I really appreciate you taking time to answer this on Christmas Day x

OP said it was left overnight in the oven and that it was still warm when she found it. A larder is a cool cupboard, I don't think you can compare the two.

    I'm sure you'll be fine.

It was traditional in my family (mam and nana) to cook the turkey on Christmas Eve and years ago they never possessed a fridge or had a large enough house for a larder.

I cook my turkey early on Christmas morning, leave it in the warm kitchen for about 4 hours resting then, after lunch, it goes into unheated conservatory. It stays there until enough is eaten for it to fit in the fridge.

I've been doing this for years and years and I'm still here to tell the tale.

People seem to be missing the main point here, the turkey was left in the oven overnight wrapped in foil. The oven would have taken a long time to cool down and the turkey being in foil would have kept it at the warm breeding bacteria stage much longer than had it been on the side or in a cool larder. This is a recipe for disaster as the cooling down is just as important as the reheating when dealing with poultry. I would not risk it to be honest
