Buying Chicken Instead of Turkey

Options
Anyone else done this instead of the 'traditional" Xmas Turkey? I just like the taste of chicken much better.. I find Turkey can be a bit dry. Chicken with a bit of Cranberry sauce is lush !

Plus it is about a quarter of the price of these overpriced Turkeys.. ka-ching !!

Yep, we've done this for years. Turkeys are just a kerfuffle, chickens are so much easier and less waste, less effort/time to cook = more time with the family. Far better IMO.

We never have Turkey at Xmas. Beef, pork, duck, goose, ham, it's not compulsory to have Turkey !

I nearly did this as it's just two of us eating meat this year, but found a reasonable priced Turkey crown in Lidl that wasn't the size of an overgrown ox.

Turkey shouldn't be dry if cooked properly and left to rest. One way to cook a whole bird is remover the legs and cook those separately as the breast cooks first, it then gets dry because the rest of the bird is still cooking.

In some countries Goose is the preferred meat on Xmas day anyways.

Always had chicken for Christmas growing up! Wasn't until I got married that I started having turkey, as that's what the in-laws serve and we go to theirs on the day.

  • Yes this year I am doing chicken in the slow cooker.

Reason is we will be out all morning so I can leave chicken to cook and when I get back all I have to do it cook my pre prepared veg and trimmings.
