Barclaycard interest and charges

Hi All,

Be very grateful for any advice.

I have a token payment plan that was set up by Stepchange, it started couple of months ago and I was told that all of my creditors had been processed for this plan. I presumed that would be ok for a while.

I have only just noticed that Barclaycard are still charging me interest and fees for defaulting/over limit.

Obviously that's not something I wanted right now, given my bad debts I have. I contacted them also to ask why this was still being charged given the payment plan was set up already.

Is there anyone with experience with Barclaycard in particular that could offer any information or past advice for this - I only got the letter from them about charges yesterday, so unfortunately it's bad timing over the Xmas hols for contacting anyone about this.

Many thanks for anything anyone can offer for this.

CFB. :)

    Hi there

Unfortunately there is no absolute obligation on creditors to freeze interest and charges in informal debt management plans like the one you have here. That said, Stepchange will endeavour to persuade all creditors to fall into line but some may require more effort than others.

I would suggest that you speak to Stepchange directly about this. They're shutting briefly for Xmas (like us) but their lines will reopen on the 29th.

    Good luck

    Hi,

If you read some of the threads on here about Barclaycard, you will see your situation is far from unique.
They seem to be the No1 creditor for being awkward.

However, having said that, lots of folk have had success in getting interest and charges stopped after writing to Barclaycard and complaining, so after Christmas, that's what I suggest you do, explain you are on a DMP with stepchange, and that the interest they are adding every month is not helping your overall situation, and ask them to stop charging it, don't ask, don't get !!!

Good luck with it, and have a great Christmas !!

  • Thanks both above, useful advice.

Yes, I will make some efforts to stop these charges as you suggest, when things get going again on the 29th. I always thought Barclaycard were a respectable name, so wouldn't be likely to be a tricky one but seems that may have been incorrect from what you say! I will hope they may be more reasonable with further discussion.

Many thanks guys, and have a great one too over Xmas!

    Hi,
BC are notorious for not stopping interest but should at least reduce it. You must write and request this along with asking them to move the payment due date to coincide with sc paying them. I have been on my dmp for 2 years now and BC always charged a small nominal amount of interest but they have now sold the debt to a dca so no interest paid now.

  • When we got into financial difficulty I rang all my creditors and barclaycard took a buget off me and told me what they thought I could afford and stopped charging me interest and charges straight away but now on the other hand nationwide were the ones I had problems with but good luck
Still hoping that eventually money will grow on trees then we can all live happily ever after ☺
In the mean time we are 31k worth of debt but it is coming down slowly....
  • Thanks to both replies above also - useful advice. :)
